Why lightning cables break so easily?

As an i. Phone user, you must have noticed that today’s lightning cables are not as sturdy and break easily. The reason why these cables break so easily is that the cable splits or frays. Since the male connector is easily bendable, it is more susceptible to breakage.

With daily use, the contacts on the lightning cable start to wear and corrode at about 6 to 9 months, but the cables fray because they aren’t properly reinforced at the ends much sooner than that. They either come apart or the wires break internally, and at $19 dollars each, that adds up fast.

A common query we ran across in our research was “Where do Lightning cables fail?”.

One thing I’ve noticed about Lightning cable failures (and reports of Lightning cable failures) is the consistent places where they’re happening: many occur at the junction point between the Lightning plug and the soft plastic cable, some impact the Lightning plug’s pins, and relatively few are at or near the USB port.

How long do Lightning cables last?

Apple’s Lightning connector hasn’t been out for four years yet, but in that time I have gone through almost a dozen cables. Apple’s own cables are the worst, barely lasting six months before the coating deteriorates and the cable starts breaking at the strain relief.

Cables stop working for several reasons one of which is the pins loose their connection holding abilities ( get bent ). Sometimes there is a circuit in the end that gets damaged or the wires come disconnects in the ends .

Is the Apple Lightning cable really that bad?

It’s no secret that the Apple lightning cable is one of the worst chargers ever made, but before you scream at an innocent Genius Bar staffer, The Wire has some suggestions to avoid spending $20 on a new cord every month. First of all, the lightning-to-USB cable that Apple makes is laughably bad.

I have lightning cables that are a couple of years old that are fine. If you don’t like the Apple cables, try Amazon basics. Based on how filthy that cable is, it has been subjected to some pretty hard wear. Apple uses a lightweight and flexible wire for connecting their mobile products. This is actually very nice except they won’t take much abuse.

Why do Chargers break off?

The answer is complex, but the best explanation is thus: The main issue with chargers is that they begin to break where the base of the charger meets the cable.

Cables breaking at the plug is a common problem across the industry. That is why strain reliefs are made. You’ll notice that the cable on your other connector is a little heavier and stiffer which will protect it a little more from too much flexing near the plug.
