Earth’s rotation and the gravitational pull of the sun and moon create tides on our planet. Because the sun is so much larger than the moon (27 million times more masssive), it has a much bigger graviational pull on Earth.
When we were researching we ran into the question “Why do tides happen on earth?”.
Tides cause daily changes in water level in the oceans and along coastlines. The primary reason for tides on Earth is gravitational interaction with the Moon and Sun. The entire Earth experiences tides – both on the continents and oceans. The effect is most pronounced in the oceans because, as a liquid, it is more easily deformed by tidal forces when compared to the solid Earth.
What causes tides on earth?
High tides and low tides are caused by the moon. The moon’s gravitational pull generates something called the tidal force. The tidal force causes Earth—and its water—to bulge out on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest from the moon.
What are the tides on Earth mainly caused by?
The periodic rise and fall of the level of water in the ocean. What causes tides? The force of gravity pulls the moon and Earth (including the water on Earth’s surface) toward each other. Tides are caused mainly by differences in how much the moon’s gravity pulls on different parts of Earth.

(1) As the tides move water around the globe, the moment of inertia of the earth changes. By conservation of angular momentum, the solid earth changes its rotation rate accordingly. (2) As the tidal currents slow down or speed up, they exchange angular momentum with the solid earth, which is manifested in the rotation rate.
How does the moon affect the tides?
For example, when an area covered by the ocean faces the moon, the moon’s gravitational force on the water causes a high high tide. As the Earth rotates, that area moves away from the moon’s influence and the tide ebbs.
What events on Earth may affect the tides?
Like ocean tides, the moon has the greatest effect on land tides because it is closer to the Earth than the sun. Due to these cycles, it is relatively easy for scientists to monitor land tides.
One thought is that The Moon has the greatest affect on the tides that we experience. As the Moon orbits the Earth, the orientation between the Earth, Moon and Sun constantly changes. The phases of the Moon that we experience every month are evidence of these changes. Since both the Moon and Sun affect tides on Earth, the orientation between all of them affects tides.
What would happen if Earth stopped having tides?

Why two tides a day?
This occurs because the moon revolves around the Earth in the same direction that the Earth rotates around its axis. Because the Earth rotates through two tidal “bulges” every lunar day, coastal areas experience two high and two low tides every 24 hours and 50 minutes.
