Poor harvests and recurrent insecurity in some regions of Ethiopia has led to food instability and falling food reserves across the country. About 2.8 million people in Sudan are affected by drought every year.

Where do droughts mostly occur in the world?

There are several places a drought will occur. They normally occur in hot areas such as Texas, Asia and Australia. The reason they occur there is because of the hot temperatures. The two seasons a drought will occur are in summer and fall. The reason they don’t occur in winter or spring is because it is too cold and wet.

More affected countries, which carry a medium to high risk of droughts, can be found in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia – including India and China – and Europe. Ukraine and its smaller neighbor have been hit by devastating droughts in the past, which majorly diminished crops.

Lack of precipitation. Insufficient means of transporting water from where it is to where it’s needed. Demand for water exceeding the supply (not quite the same as #1, but certainly related).

What is a drought and what causes it?

More rain, sleet, hail, and snow can occur where there are moist, low-pressure air systems.

At around the same time (1876-78), approximately 5 million Indians died when the monsoon failed in successive years.
